Grip Size and Face Rotation
One of the cheapest fixes in golf, and one of the most commonly overlooked.
Grip size rarely gets attention during a casual equipment purchase, yet it directly shapes how freely your hands can rotate through the hitting area — and hand rotation is one of the main drivers of face angle at impact. Get the size wrong in either direction and you're fighting your own equipment before the swing even starts down.
Undersized Grips
A grip that's too small for your hand allows more freedom of movement in the fingers and wrist, which tends to let the hands rotate more actively through impact. For many golfers this shows up as a face that closes later than intended, sending shots left of target, particularly under pressure or with a faster transition.
Oversized Grips
A grip that's too large restricts natural hand action, which can leave the face open at impact because the release simply can't complete on time. This often reads as a push or a mild slice that persists no matter how many swing adjustments are attempted.
Getting the Size Right
Correct grip size is measured from glove size and hand length together, then confirmed on the bay with impact tape — not assumed from a chart alone. We'll often test two or three grip sizes back to back during a session and watch the face-angle number move in real time as the size changes, before any other spec is touched.
Grip size is one of the few fitting variables that can move your face angle by more than a degree without changing a single thing about your swing.
Wraps and Texture Matter Too
Beyond core size, grip wraps (standard round, ribbed, or reminder-groove styles) can subtly cue hand placement and influence rotation as well. A ribbed grip, for example, encourages a consistent hand position that can steady face angle for golfers whose grip pressure or placement varies from swing to swing.
The Takeaway
Before chasing a new head or shaft to fix a start-line problem, it's worth confirming grip size is correct first. It's inexpensive, it's fast to test, and for a meaningful number of golfers it resolves more of the miss than anything downstream in the fitting.
Check Your Grip Size
Every fitting session starts with a grip and lie angle check before we touch a new head.
