How a Shaft Spec Sheet Connects to Your Start Line
Flex, weight, and torque don't curve the ball on their own — they shape release timing, and release timing decides where your face is pointed when it matters. Here's what the numbers mean once you're watching your own face angle on the bay screen.
A Relative Label, Not a Fixed Standard
Flex ratings (Ladies, Senior, Regular, Stiff, Extra Stiff) aren't standardized across manufacturers — a "Stiff" shaft from one brand can load and release noticeably differently from a "Stiff" shaft from another. Flex is better understood as a description of how much a shaft bends and unwinds during the downswing relative to your tempo and transition speed.
A shaft too flexible for your swing can release early, closing the face before impact and pulling your start line left of target; too stiff, and the face can hang open through impact, pushing the start line right.
The Number That Shapes Timing Most
Lighter Shafts
Increase swing speed for players who benefit from it, but can also let the hands and face rotate faster through impact — sometimes past square, pulling your start line offline.
Heavier Shafts
Slow the release slightly, which often steadies face angle at impact for players prone to an over-active release, at some cost to raw swing speed.
Multi-Weight & Counterbalanced
Shift weight distribution to change swing feel without necessarily changing total weight, which can adjust release timing independent of the flex label.
The Twist You Don't See, But Do Feel
Torque measures how much a shaft twists under load during the downswing. Lower torque generally means a more stable face angle for faster, more aggressive transitions, while higher torque can add feel and a softer release for smoother tempos — but too much torque for an aggressive swing can let the face twist unpredictably right before contact.
